Tuesday, November 12, 2024 5 pm Reception | 6 pm Lecture "A New Sixth-century AD martyrial basilica: Bir el Knissia in the sacred landscape of Carthage (Tunisia)" Susan Stevens, Randolph College Professor of Classics Emeritus Trained as a Classical philologist specializing in Latin with research as an archaeologist, Stevens is a specialist in the archaeology of North Africa. She has directed excavations at Carthage and Lamta (Tunisia), and these excavations resulted in the publication of numerous articles and three books, the most recent of which is Bir el Knissia at Carthage: a martyrial basilica complex. Second and Final report, released in March 2024. Stevens will discuss the Bir el Knissia basilica, its design and primary function as a place of burial, and as a pilgrimage destination, renowned, like Rome, for its wealth of holy sites. Free and open to the public.

That’s approximately the effect when singer and tenor saxophonist Camille Thurman performs.” -Downbeat Magazine “You’re hard-pressed to find rising talents more exciting than Camille Thurman.” -The New York Times Camille Thurman is known for her creative brilliance, effortless mastery, and undeniably distinct approach to music as both a powerhouse vocalist and saxophonist. Thurman was the first woman in 30 years to tour and perform full-time internationally with the world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as a saxophonist and woodwind doubler from 2018 to 2020. A respected leading musician, she has appeared at notable venues and festivals worldwide, including The Kennedy Center, Rose Theater, Winter Jazz Fest, and The Colbert Show. Camille has four full-length recordings as a leader to her credit and was an NAACP Image Award Nominee. Her most recent project, “Confluence: Vol 1,” is a collaboration with master drummer Darrell Green and his quartet.
